High Country Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan
Watauga County Emergency Management is asking for the public’s assistance in answering questions about Hazard Mitigation.

Watauga County is one of four counties involved in the High Country Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Other counties involved are Ashe, Wilkes, and Alleghany.

The High Country Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan must be updated every five years and submitted to FEMA for approval. Your input is requested to provide information to Emergency Management officials to better serve you.

About Cove Creek Fire

The Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department is located at 193 Smith Street in Vilas, North Carolina, near the intersection of Highway 321 South and Highway 421 North in western Watauga County. The Fire Department provides multiple fire, rescue and emergency medical services within the Cove Creek Fire District.

Cove Creek Fire Department is a completely volunteer fire department with approximately 35 active volunteer members. Our personnel serve in a variety of capacities, both operationally and administratively. Anyone interested in serving with the fire department is welcome to contact us at (828) 297-1375 for more information.

The Fire Department is led operationally by Chief Terry Combs, who has served as Fire Chief since 1998. He has also been a member of the department for over 30 years. Administratively, the Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department is managed jointly by the Fire Chief and a community elected Board of Directors.
